Abstract

The pivoted mast inclines the rigging of a wind-propelled vessel to the wind. Its sail area is greater than that of a sailboard. It uses a manually-operated mechanical drive, or the force of the wind itself, to give the inclination to the board. When mounted on a catamaran, this can be done by a sliding stay at hull level. The base of the mast can be movable on a rail, while its head is secured by rigid stays.

Description

a present invention relates to the rigging of monohull or multihull sailboats and must allow a significant improvement of the
efficiency of said rigging and its effects on the propulsion of
It can also be applied equally to all land vehicles using sail as a propulsion mode, in particular land yachts
Dynamic co-propelling of a windsurfing board: reservations: the current use of windsurfing type boats
articulated rigging at the foot of the mast highlighted a phenomenon
which allows these machines to have very high speeds on the water given their small sail area (71S maximum).

These speeds reached are always higher than those of
dinghies placed in the same wind conditions and equal
almost that of sport catamarans.

Explanations: This superiority is due on the one hand to the low weight of the board-passenger assembly and on the other hand to the fact that
the mast being tilted laterally, the wind gives the sail a
lift tending to lift the boat out of the water, decreasing
thereby its wet surface and therefore its friction with
the liquid element. This lift allows the boat
to accelerate the hydroglissement phenomenon (planing in English)
which occurs on a large boat reaching a certain
speed on water.

Dynamic behavior of sailboats: Observations:
On all current vehicles propelling themselves under sail, this is the
reverse phenomenon to that observed on windsurfers which
product: Again the wind is violent, the more the boat tends to
gite This angle of gite, weak on multihulls can become
very important on monohulls and that's what explains the
superiority in speed of the former over the latter.

xplications: The leeward inclination of the rigging has the effect
to induce a vertical component directed downwards which tends
to push the sailboat into the water and therefore brake it.

(The users of a sailboat over-canvas in relation to the wind and
whose angle of lodging becomes important have the impression that their
sailboat "wallows"). Due to the large sail area
used on sailboats, there is of course no question
to use direct force i the mass of a team member to tilt
in the wind the rigging of a sailboat.

Cnamp d'application expérimental::
Figure I:Catamaran de sport gréé en "sloop" :
It is therefore necessary to resort to mechanical means or use the force of the salt to tilt the rigging in the wind and thus obtain, like what is obtained on sailing missiles, a lift tending to raise the boat during the battens
Cnamp of experimental application:
Because of the significant inclination that I intend to give to the rigging, it is advisable to experiment the device on
catamarans of which, in principle, the width is important although
nothing stands in the way of applying the principle and the systems that I
will describe to monohulls or other multihulls even
very important dimensions of the type of those used for the
cruise or the cruise race
tilting system of the rigging of a sailboat requiring numerical intervention to tack:
Figure I: Sport catamaran rigged in "sloop":
This very simple system can be applied to a catamaran sold in commerce with a limited number of modifications: the system of the two conventional guy lines is replaced by a closed circuit (a) comprising as a fixed point the mast head casing (b) and , as points allowing to circulate the cable-stayed circuit two pulleys (d) fixed in place of the guy bolts
A system of one or two safety stops (e) limits the inclination of the mast in case, the sails being taken against, the rigging is then tilted downwind.

A system of two simple hoists with two strands (f) mounted in opposition and fixed on the one hand to the guy line, on the other hand to each edge (g), allows the crew with a force multiplied by two, tilt the mast (c) at will and adjust this inclination by means of cleat cleats (n) blocking the free end of the hoists.

Figures 2 and j: U1 additional system independent of the previous one can allow the mast to take an important and variable aft quest which allows the sailboat to benefit from a lift at the pace of the tail wind and to advance the center of Vélique thrust (a) compared to the center of the plane of drift (b) to make the sailboat more stable in direction at this pace-
Many systems are already used to modify the quest for the mast: Let us quote for example that of the foot of the sliding mast in a gutter with set of calibrated shims to block it and the systems with screw or hoist having the same effect as the previous one .Note on the other hand that, until now, the pace of the tailwind @ 'is not that where the c @ tamaran shows itself the most efficient, which will tend to diminish the interest of the quest for variable mast if this did not increase the efficiency of the rig
wind at other gaits less arrived
Figure @ :: Wanting to make the mast foot (a) travel a greater distance, a possible process is the use of a mast foot (a) mounted on a cnoriot (b), rolling on a rail (c) of suitable profile and section To move the mast foot forward, in the case of an horizontal rail (c), two double-strand hoists (d) with fixed point (e) on the mast, point @ de pulls on the nau -bans and at the foot of the mast, "dead" strand (f) passing through the mast prolil and cleat cleat (g) to block the free strand (h) in intermediate positions, seems sufficient to me. the mast oXed to the rear, that is to say to straighten the rigging, a double hoist% four strands (i) bridged in opposition to the
previous is necessary, also equipped with a cleat cleat (j)
for the free strand (k).

Figures 4 and 5: Cruising or speed catamaran

special kind of catamaran replacing the two stay cables
rear serving as a spacer for the "gantry" by a circuit of
line with fixed points for the two masthead covers (a)
and for sliding points two pulleys (b) installed each
behind a mast foot.

In both cases the shrouding of the shrouds must be lower than on a conventional fixed shroud, so as to obtain a significant inclination of the Ligurian mast lO: In order to limit the lateral bending of the mast, we will use
