Abstract

The pressing cycle includes the following automatic sequence:-(1) a single orange is released from a batch in a storage hopper to fall into a pocket formed by a pair of coaxial hinged 'hands' at the ends of telescopic arms. (2) The hands grip the orange from opposite sides, leaving a diametral gap through which a cutter separates the orange into two halves, each half remaining gripped by its hand. (3) The arms retract to allow the cutter to be replaced by rotary press heads. The arms advance to squeeze the halves on the press heads. (4) Juice, pulp and pips fall into a centrifuge which delivers clarified juice into a reservoir which is refrigerated. (5) The hands are retracted to discharge empty peel hemispheres into a grinder which also receives waste from the centrifuge. (6) The hands are washed and returned to the cycle restart position. The sequence continues to deliver juice until the reservoir is full and is then stopped until a restart low level is reached. The operation is entirely automatic. The peel is not crushed into the juice which protects it from bitter flavours.
