Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a pyrotechnic device for cutting and ejecting an airplane canopy using detonating cords.
In order to obtain rapid opening of the canopy in the event of distress, pyrotechnic processes are increasingly used and in particular detonating cord systems.
At present, two main methods are used:
The first consists in weakening the transparent element of the canopy by placing the detonating cords on it, and the ejectable seat, during its passage, causes the final rupture into numerous pieces. The weakened area can be located only to the right of the ejection seat or cover the entire surface of the transparency. However, this method presents a significant risk: the impact of the seat on the canopy causes a shock and many pieces of ice risk injuring the pilot when he is evacuated.
This risk is eliminated by using a second method which consists in cutting the transparency by placing cords with hollow charge along the periphery of the canopy: the transparency is thus removed from a block, without breaking, but even in this case the seat, when it is ejected, may come into contact with the cut piece of transparency.
The object of the present invention is precisely a device which eliminates all these drawbacks, by freeing the passage of the ejectable seat from any obstacle.
According to the main characteristic of the device which is the subject of the invention, this device, of the type which ensures the cutting and ejection of a transparent element of an airplane canopy by means of a system of detonating cords, said canopy having a plane of symmetry substantially coincident with that of the airplane and being maintained in the structure of the passenger compartment of the airplane by virtue of two longitudinal edges and two arches, at least part of the detonating cord system being located at the periphery of the canopy along the arches and longitudinal edges, is characterized in that at least an additional part of the detonating cord system is disposed at the upper part of the transparent element, substantially along the plane of symmetry of the canopy, so that the explosion allows the cutting of said element into two roughly symmetrical parts.
The fact that a part of the detonating cord system is arranged at the upper part of the canopy and along its plane of symmetry ensures the opening of the latter in two approximately symmetrical parts. The impulse produced by the detonating cords is sufficient to produce a spacing which allows the passage of the seat. In addition, the two parts cut and ejected to the outside are intact and therefore no projection is likely to injure the pilot.

In Figure la, we can see the canopy 1 held in the structure of the passenger compartment of the aircraft by means of two longitudinal edges 2 and 3 and two arches 4 and 5. We also see the detonating cord 6, shown in lines dotted line, part of which is disposed along the longitudinal edges 2, 3 and the arches 4, 5. However, another part of the detonating cord 6 is disposed at the upper part of the canopy 1 forming a loop 7 elongated along the plane of symmetry of the canopy while the two ends of the cord are connected to a conventional firing system 11.
Thanks to this arrangement, the detonating cord cuts the canopy into two symmetrical parts 8 and 9 which move away from each other at the time of the explosion (figure lb): thus there is no longer obstacle in the path of the ejection seat 10 and the pilot is not likely to be injured.
Figures 2a and 2b show enlargements of Figure la at sections I and II respectively and show how the detonating cord is held against the transparent element.
In Figure 2a, we see the fixing system along the longitudinal edge 2: the transparent element 12 is held in a groove 13 formed in the longitudinal edge 2, the latter being itself fixed to the structure 14 of the cockpit of the aircraft.
The detonating cord 6 is on the inside of the canopy and it is glued against the transparent 12 by means of a material 15 which completely covers it: the whole is held in place by an elastomer profile which is made up of 2 parts 16 and 17 glued to the longitudinal border 2 and the transparency 12 respectively.
The two parts 16 and 17 of the profile have wings 18 and 19 respectively which can slide relative to each other at the time of the explosion when the part 8 of the transparent element is ejected from the plane.
A similar system is used to fix the part of the detonating cord located at the upper part of the canopy (Figure 2b): the two strands 20 and 21 of the cord which form the loop 7 are always coated in the sticky material 15, but the two parts 16 and 17 of the elastomer support are glued to the transparent: at the time of the explosion, the detonation separates the transparent into two pieces 8 and 9 which move away from each other carrying with them the elements 16 and 17 of the support For a short time, the wings 18 and 19 of the elements 16 and 17 slide horizontally relative to each other and protect the interior of the cabin from possible projections (pieces of transparency, detonation products) .
Figures 3a to 3c are schematic top views showing other possible arrangements of the detonating cord system.
One can for example use two different cords, the first cord 22 being disposed at the periphery of the canopy and the second cord 23 being disposed at the upper part thereof, a single relay 24 ensuring the ignition of the two cords 22 and 23.
The system of FIG. 3b uses a single cord but this forms 2 loops 25 and 26 located respectively at the front and at the rear of the transparency: at the time of detonation, a very regular crack is propagated between the ends 27 and 28 of the loops 25 and 26 thus ensuring the cutting of the transparency into two substantially symmetrical parts. This system is more particularly suitable for diving windows since it avoids placing an obstacle in the pilot's line of sight.
FIG. 3c illustrates a variant in which the peripheral cord 22 and the central cord 23 are actuated by relays 29: in this case, the relays are not in direct contact with the transparency to avoid secondary ruptures and cutting of the transparency at neighborhood of the relays is obtained by regular cracking.
A variant of the detonating cord attachment system is illustrated in FIGS. 4a to 4c.
At the time of the explosion, the closed profile 30 deforms on the side of the transparent, causing it to rupture, but it does not crack and the products of the detonation are contained (FIG. 4b).
Figure 4c illustrates the same system at the top of the canopy: the two strands 20 and 21 of the cord forming a loop at this location are enclosed in PVC profiles 32 and 33, themselves held against the inner wall transparency by supports 34 and 35.
At the time of the explosion, the sections 32 and 33 deform, causing the transparency to break into two pieces 8 and 9. However, the sections 32 and 33 do not break and the products of the detonation are not likely to be projected onto the pilot.
The detonating cord device object of the invention has particularly interesting advantages. First of all, the fact that the transparent canopy element opens in two approximately symmetrical parts frees the passage of the ejection seat from any obstacle and the pilot is not likely to strike the transparent at the time of ejection. . In addition, the cord fastening systems are such that at the time of the explosion, the pilot is not likely to be hit by possible projections due to the detonation: the device which is the subject of the invention therefore removes almost completely the risk of injury due to cutting the canopy.
It goes without saying that the invention is not limited to the few examples which have just been described and that many variations can be imagined without departing from the scope of the invention, in particular as regards the number and the arrangement of the detonating cords and the means of fixing them against the transparent.
