Abstract
Description
In the main patent, aerodynamic profiles used for the swaying of rotary-wing aircraft have been described and, more particularly, a family of profiles for helicopter rotor blades. As has been shown, this family of aerodynamic profiles for helicopter rotor blades is capable of very high performance both in hovering and in high speed flight, without altering the performance of the aircraft in evo lution.
For this, according to the main patent, a blade profile for rotary wing of an aircraft, comprising between the leading edge and the trailing edge a convex upper surface and a non-concave lower surface, is remarkable in that, at the point of curvature maximum of the leading edge, the radius of curvature Ro is approximately defined 2 by the expression Ro = 1.7 C. e max in which
C represents the chord and e max the maximum relative thickness of said profile, and in that the lower surface portion adjacent to said leading edge comprises a first lower surface area immediately adjacent to the leading edge and extending up to a few percent of the cord C, in which the curvature decreases rapidly towards the trailing edge and a second intrados area extending the first and extending up to about 20% of the cord from said edge attack, this second lower surface having a very slight general curvature decreasing continuously towards the trailing edge up to the point of minimum curvature of the lower surface which is at the end of said second zone.
This avoids the appearance of an intense shock wave in the part of the lower surface close to the leading edge, which prevents the separation of the boundary layer, so that the drag coefficient is low and that the Tralnea divergence mach is high in the case of rapid flight.
In order to be able to easily define and generate the family profiles, the main patent has indicated a process consisting in establishing a continuous skeleton, or medium line, which passes through the point of maximum curvature of the leading edge and by the trailing edge of the profile to be constructed and which comprises on the one hand, a first part convex towards the upper surface extending between said point of maximum curvature of the leading edge and the point of said skeleton furthest from the chord of said profile, and, on the other hand, a second substantially straight part extending approximately from said most distant point of the chord to the trailing edge, in that a symmetrical biconvex profile is also established which has a rope identical to that of the profile to be constructed and whose maximum relative thickness is approximately one third of the rope and is between 6 and 13% of the rope, after which, for each point of the rope of said biconvex profile, we measure the D distance from the lower and upper surface to the rope, and at each corresponding point on the mean line of the profile to be constructed, orthogonally and on either side of it, the distance thus measured from way to get the profile to build.
Preferably related to a system of orthogonal axes
OX, oY, in which the origin O is the point of maximum curvature of the leading edge, OX, the chord of the profile oriented from the leading edge towards the trailing edge and OY an axis perpendicular to OX and oriented from l on the lower surface towards the upper surface, the symmetrical biconvex profile is such that the part of its lower surface or its upper surface between the leading edge and the maximum thickness, is approximately defined by a relation of the shape
y = k5 x3 + k6 x2 + k7 x + k8 x 1/2 + ka while the part of the lower or upper surface of said biconvex profile between the maximum thickness and the trailing edge is approximately defined by a form relation
y = k10 X + kll X + k12 the different k. being constant coefficients and x and y the coordinates related to the length of the profile chord.
k5 = -0,1172 k9 = 0,0006
k6 = 0,0071 k10=-0,1153
k7 = -0,1068 kll 0,084a
k8 = 0,1446 k12 0,0295
In the case where the maximum thickness of said biconvex profile is chosen to be approximately equal to 9% of the chord, said coefficients advantageously have the following approximate values
k5 = -0.1172 k9 = 0.0006
k6 = 0.0071 k10 = -0.1153
k7 = -0.1068 kll 0.084a
k8 = 0.1446 k12 0.0295
The purpose of this addition is to indicate profiles of the family defined above, which, while retaining the flow qualities common to the family (i.e. no separation of the boundary layer , especially at the bottom of the profile and no high shock wave), have either a Cz coefficient of lift or a Mach of MDX drag divergence, further improved compared to the other profiles in the family.

Also, according to a first aspect of the present addition, in order to obtain, by implementing the method described in the main patent, a profile of the family having an improved lift coefficient, a curve is chosen for the continuous skeleton, related to the axis system defined above, satisfies at least approximately the following equations - for 0 # x # 0.32 y = a1VT + a2x + a3x2 + + a4x3 + a5x4, with

a10 = -0.3883 the x and y coordinates being related to the length of the chord of the profile, while, for the symmetrical biconvex profile, a maximum relative thickness e max close to 12% is chosen, this biconvex profile being obtained at starting from the biconvex profile with a maximum thickness of 9% recalled above by multiplying the ordinates of this last profile by an equal homothetic ratio

Furthermore, according to the second aspect of the present addition, to obtain, by the implementation of the method described in the main patent, a profile of the family having an improved MDX drag divergence Mach, a curve is chosen for the continuous skeleton which, compared to the axis system defined above, satisfies at least approximately the following equations - for 0 # x # 0.24
y = bl + b2x + b3x2 + b4x3 + b5x4, with
bl = - 0.013741
b2 = 0.21824
b3 = - 1.4504
b4 = 5.022
b5 = - 7.0651 - and for 0.24 # x # 1
y = b6 + b7 # x + b8x + b9x + b10x + b11x4, with
b6 = 0.012714 bg = 0.028575
b7 = -0.004936 b10 = -0.060413
b8 = -0.012855 bll = 0.03702
The x and y coordinates being related to the length of the profile chord, while, for the symmetrical biconvex profile, a maximum relative thickness emax close to 6% is chosen, this biconvex profile being obtained from the biconvex profile of thickness maximum of 9% recalled above by multiplying the ordinates of this last profile by a homothetic ratio equal to 9.
Thus, these three profiles of the family having respectively maximum thicknesses of 6%, 9% and 12% are obtained from the same basic biconvex profile (that of the profile at 9%), which, after adaptation to the maximum thickness desired, undergoes a transformation around a skeleton specific to each profile.
This feature is particularly interesting, because it has been revealed that, in a rotary wing of radius
R,
- the 9% profile was particularly suitable for
making the section of a blade included
between 0.75 R and 0.9 R from the axis of rotation
sails (as indicated in the main patent
cipal)
- the 12% profile, with lift coefficient C z
improved, was particularly suitable for
realization of the section of a blade between
0 and 0.75 R, i.e. when the
root portion of the blade, in the vicinity
attachments thereof to the rotor hub.
d'une pale, comprise entre 0, 9 R et R.- 6% profile, Mach of divergence of drag
improved, was particularly suitable
at the completion of the end section
a blade, between 0.9 R and R.
Thus, it is possible to produce the three sections of a blade according to the invention, having the advantageous tapered parts described in the main patent from the single biconvex profile at 9%,
Consequently, for these root profiles (12% J and ex-extremity (6%), the same essential geometric characteristics are preserved (radius of the leading edge, evolution of the curvature in the front lower surface) and similar transformation laws for biconvex profiles, but we use a skeleton of their own.
The figures of the accompanying drawing will make it clear how the invention can be implemented.
Figure 1 shows the skeletons of the two profiles according to this addition.
La figure 2 donne, pour le profil à 9% d'épaisseur m=dsale décrit dans le brevet principal et pour les profils à 6 % et 12 % d'épaisseur m nmaIe conformes à l'addition, la variation du coefficient de portance C z en fonction de l'incidence a.FIG. 2 gives, for the profile at 9% thickness m = dsale described in the main patent and for the profiles at 6% and 12% thickness m nmaIe conforming to the addition, the variation of the lift coefficient C z as a function of incidence a.
In the main patent, to facilitate the description, the profile according to the invention has been related to a system of axes QX, OY, orthogonal to each other at point O, which coincides with the point of the region of the leading edge ott the radius of curvature is minimum.
The axis OX, which passes through the point of the trailing edge, is moreover confused with the chord of the profile.
The system of axes OX, OY, the positive directions of which are chosen from the leading edge towards the trailing edge and from the lower surface to the upper surface, serves as a reference for reduced coordinates, that is to say to abscissas x and to ordinates y, respectively related to the length C of the profile chord. Furthermore, it had been considered in particular, to determine the external contour of a profile of the family according to the invention, a line mean or skeleton, passing through the point O and the trailing edge, which represents the geometrical location of the equidistant points of the pressure and pressure lines.
Indeed, it is by deformation of a type of symmetrical biconvex profile, around a particular mean line, that one has, among other things, defines the profile in accordance with the main patent.
In this addition, we take up such a system of axes OX, OY. FIG. 1 shows, in relation to this system of axes, the skeleton 10 ′ of an improved coefficient of lift profile and the skeleton 10 ″ of an improved drag divergence Mach profile.
The skeleton 10 'has two parts 10'a and 10'b, connected at point i, of abscissa x = 0.32.

As mentioned in the main patent, to obtain a family profile, symmetrically deformed on either side of such skeletons, a symmetrical biconvex profile.
Such a symmetrical biconvex profile comprises an upper line of upper surfaces and a lower line of lower surfaces arranged symmetrically on each side of the axis OX and admits the same cord of length C as the profile to be obtained.
The master couple of the symmetrical biconvex profile is moreover located at an abscissa equal to one third of the cord C and the height of this master couple which constitutes in fact the maximum thickness is at least equal to 6%, and at most equal at 13%, of the value of the chord of said profile. The upper extrados line is composed of a first curved part starting at point O and ending at the level of the main torque, extended from this by a second curved part limited towards the rear of the profile by the trailing edge 8.

According to a preferred form of definition described in the main patent and admitting a third of the cord a maximum thickness of 9%, said first curved part is mainly determined in the system of axes OX, OY by the relation (3)

To construct the symmetrical biconvex profile to be associated with the skeleton 10 ', we take the symmetrical biconvex profile with a maximum thickness of 9% defined above and we multiply the ordinates of its underside line and its line extrados by report 12
We therefore obtain a symmetrical biconvex profile 9 with a maximum thickness of 12%. The latter is deformed around the skeleton 10 ′ and a profile is obtained which has a high lift coefficient.
Similarly, to build the symmetrical biconvex profile to be associated with the 10 "skeleton, we take the symmetrical biconvex profile with a maximum thickness of 9% defined above and we multiply the ordinates of its underside line and its line d 'extrados by the ratio 6. A symmetrical biconvex profile 9 is then obtained with a maximum thickness of 6%. This is deformed around the skeleton 10 "and a profile is obtained which has a Mach of divergence of greater drag.
Sur cette figure, les courbes L,L' et L" représentent la variation du coefficient de portance z en fonction de l'incidence a du profil, respectivement pour les profils à 9%, 12% et 6% d'épaisseur maximale, pour un nombre de Mach voisin de 0,5.Comparative tests were carried out, under the same conditions, between these new profiles of maximum respective thickness of 12% and 6% according to the addition, and that of maximum thickness of 9% according to the main patent. A part of the results obtained is shown in FIG. 2. In this figure, the curves L, L ′ and L ″ represent the variation of the lift coefficient z as a function of the incidence a of the profile, respectively for the profiles at 9%. , 12% and 6% of maximum thickness, for a Mach number close to 0.5.
Figure 2 shows that, compared to the profile at 9% maximum thickness (curve L), the profile at 12% maximum thickness has a strong increase in the lift coefficient. We can see that the maximum lift coefficient increases by about 15%. This increase occurs without practically changing the moment coefficient CmOI with almost zero lift, of the profile at 9% of maximum thickness.
In addition, tests have shown that the drag coefficient Cx of the profile at 12% maximum thickness remains very low.
With regard to the profile at 6% maximum thickness, tests have shown that, for an almost zero lift coefficient, its Mach of divergence of drag is close to 0.91, while it is 0.85 for the profile at 9% maximum thickness, an increase of around 7%.
In addition, as shown in Figure 2, the maximum lift coefficient of the profile at 6% maximum thickness is close to 1, i.e. has practically the same value as the maximum lift coefficient obtained at Mach 0.4 for a reference NACA 0012 profile, whose thickness is twice as thick.
Thus, the profiles at 12% and 6% maximum thickness are particularly suitable for making the root sections and end of blade of rotary wing whose intermediate part is constituted by the profile h-9-% thickness maximum: in fact, in the root zone, an increase in the lift coefficient is obtained without appreciable modification of the moment coefficient Cmo with almost zero lift, while in the thin end region the lift of the receding blade is improved and the premature appearance of the loss of lift is avoided, without penalizing the drag of the blade, when the latter is in the advancing position.
