Abstract

The lever (7) has a flat underside (72) which rests on the valve tappet (5). The upper side (73) of the lever is profiled. A cam (6) acts on the profiled surface to force the lever and through the tappet and valve down to open the valve. An auxiliary cam (8) on the side of the lever moves it sideways against a spring (9). This movement alters the part of the profile (73) on the top of the lever on which the first cam acts. This in turn alters the timing of the valve movement. The cams are linked by gears which can be adjusted to alter the valve timing.
