Abstract

The wave power energy converter is mounted on a vertical axis supported by a vertical column. The vertical rotating shaft carried in bearings in the column, has radial arms fixed perpendicular to the shaft. The arms are at equal angles in the horizontal plane. Each arm has a rigid rectangular flap suspended from it by pivots. Below each arm, and fixed to the rotating shaft, a radial projection prevents the flap moving past the vertical when wave pressure is applied in one sense, while not impeding the angular displacement of the flap in the opposite sense. A wave causes a net torque on the shaft because one flap is held square on by the projection while the diametrically opposite flap in deflected upwards towards the horizontal. The ebb and flow of a wave causes first one side of the converter, then the other, to be effective. The rotating shaft is gear coupled to an electric generator mounted on a fixed vertical rod attached to the support column.

Description

Double effect collector of wave movement
We know that the waves of the sea are subject to a continuous ebb and flow.

The continual reversal of their direction of advancement therefore creates considerable problems of exploitation of kinetic energy.

The present invention solves these problems with simplicity, as will be demonstrated below.

According to this invention, a mobile crown is provided with a vertical axis of rotation with radial blades articulated on substantially horizontal spokes.

They are articulated at the top, the force of gravity therefore tending to Baire assume the blades a vertical rest position.

The rotation of each of the blades on its articulation, under the push of the waves, is blocked in one of two directions (the same for all the blades), when the vertical position, or in any case the position of maximum incidence of the waves, is reached, by stop elements integral with the movable crown, so that, when the waves advance in one direction, the blades which, from moment to moment come to lie on one side of the axis of rotation of the mobile crown, receive full wave thrust, while the blades being on the opposite side, freely rotating on their articulation, are arranged so as to offer the waves a minimal incidence.

When the direction of advance of the waves is reversed, the blades which come to be situated in the part previously subjected in full to the thrust of the waves are arranged in the position of minimum incidence, and the blades located on the opposite side receive the thrust of the waves in full. This with an effect of rotation always in the same direction of the mobile crown, independently of the direction of advance of the waves in their ebb and flow.

In a preferred embodiment, the blades are four in number, rectangular and arranged at 900 relative to the shaft of the movable crown, in order to avoid any interference between the blades during their progressive lifting.

The characteristics and aims of this invention will be made even clearer by the exemplary embodiments illustrated by the schematic figures.

Fig. 5) Détail
Fig. 5) Detail
Fig. 1), the movable crown 10) is free to rotate around the fixed shaft 11), on which the electric generator 12) is mounted. The blades 14), 15), 16), 17) are suspended from the arms 13).

The teeth 18) integral with the movable crown prevent the blades from turning around the arms in one of the two directions in addition to the vertical. The fixed shaft is secured to the column 19) anchored to the bottom of the sea. The electric current generated is conveyed to the shore by the cables 20).

When the waves advance in the direction of the arrows, the blades being in the position of the blade 14), that is to say to the right of the figure, receive the thrust of the waves in full while the blades which are in the position of the blade 16), that is to say on the left, are raised under the push of the waves, offering them little resistance.

When the movement of the waves is reversed, the blades on the right will lift and those on the left will receive the full thrust of the waves. The movable crown will therefore always rotate in the same direction regardless of the direction of the waves.

The simplicity of the installation and its considerable advantages in terms of efficiency and overall power are obvious.

Fig. 2). lBlle illustrates a movable crown 21), almost identical to that of FIG. 1), presenting the variant of the masses 22) which partially balance the weight of the light alloy blades such as 23).

The difference between the weights of the masses and that of the blades is sufficient to constrain the panels in a vertical position while opposing 'as a minimum measure the lifting already described (blades like 24) and therefore the movement of the movable crown.

In the variant of FIG. 3, the movable crown 25) is composed of two series 26) and 27) of superimposed blades like 28) and 29), each having a height of about half that of FIGS. 1 and 2). It is thus possible to provide a larger number of blades with a more continuous effect of wave pushing.

The variant of FIG. 4) consists in the adoption on the movable crown 38), in place of each blade, of a couple 30) of blades 31) and 32), each of them articulated on the arms respectively as in 33) and 34) .

The pairs of gears 35) and 36), integral with the blades, determine for each blade of each couple a movement opposite to that of the other blade and therefore their reciprocal balancing.

The development of the teeth of the gears, as clearly shown in FIG. 5), is such that it prevents the blades from overturning beyond the vertical position and also from reaching a horizontal position.

Under the pressure of the waves, the right blades tend to open and those on the left to close like the couple 37).

When the waves change direction, the blades of this last couple are forced to open and to be arranged in vertical position, receiving in full the shock of the waves.

The efficiency of the installation benefits from the balancing and the symmetrical arrangement of the blades of each pair.
