Abstract

In the sec. cooling of continuous castings by water spraying, the cooling water contains one or more of 5-300 mg/l CrO4(2-) ions, 10-150 mg/l Zn(2+) ions, 300-1200 mg/l SO4(2-) ions and 30-60 mg/l SiO3(2-) ions. The water pref. has a pH of 6-9 and is circulated in a closed circuit. The cooling method may also be used to cool the rolls of a hot rolling mill or the guide rolls of a sheet cooling installation. Addn. of the ions to the water reduces the wear of the rolls to a few tens of mm per year and increases the time required for initiation and propagation of cracks so that the useful life to rupture of the roll jackets by a factor of about 1.5-5.

Description

The subject of the invention is a water spray cooling method which can be used in particular in continuous casting.

It is known that in continuous casting the bar leaving the ingot mold is in the form of a tube, the cross section of which has the dimension of the section of the ingot mold and the walls of which are constituted by the steel solidified in the ingot mold. The residual liquid steel is contained inside these solidified steel walls. The solidification of this still liquid part continues in a so-called secondary cooling zone. The bar is guided in this zone by rollers with an axis perpendicular to the direction of travel, of increasing diameter and spacing from the lower part of the mold until the end of the zone. Water sprinkler systems are arranged between these rollers. Cooling takes place by exchanges with the support rollers, by radiation and by spraying water on the external surfaces of the bar. The heat extracted by conduction through the thickness of the solidified walls comes from the solidification in progress on the inner face of the solidified walls and the loss of temperature thereof.

The guide rollers located in the secondary cooling zone, which are in contact with the surfaces of the bar, undergo surface temperature cycles which, in the continuous rotation regime of the rollers, change, depending on the type of rollers and the speed of rotation, from 200 to 5000C at the contact level to 50 to 1000C outside the contact region.

These thermal cycles are damped in the thickness of the jacket, cooled or not internally, of the roller. The corresponding temperature gradient fluctuations generate stresses in the metal constituting the jacket of the roller, the amplitude of the variations during a rotation is such that they create on the surface a state of thermal fatigue which brings about a more or less long delay the ruin of the roller by sudden rupture.

It was found that the wear of the surface of the roller in contact with the bar was much greater and the thermal fatigue process of the roller much faster in the secondary cooling zone, where the rollers are constantly wetted on the surface by the systems. only in the following areas without sprinkler systems.

To reduce this wear and subsequent cracking due to thermal fatigue, steels of different compositions have been proposed for the liners of the rollers. This solution is generally expensive and is not always satisfactory.

The present invention provides another solution to this problem. It consists in adding to the water sprayed in the secondary cooling zone a combination of some or all of the following inhibitory elements, in the proportions indicated in milligrams per liter of water - CrO4 ions in proportion from 5 to 300 mg / l , for example
in the form of Na2Cr04, 4 H20 or other composition.

- Ions Zn++ en proportion de 10 à 150 mg/l, par exemple
sous forme de ZnS04, 7 H20 ou autre composition.
- Zn ++ ions in proportion from 10 to 150 mg / l, for example
in the form of ZnSO4, 7 H20 or other composition.

- Ions so4 en proportion de 300 à 1200 mu/#1, sous forme
de sulfates de sodium, de potassium, de zinc (déjà cité),
ou autre composition.
- Ions so4 in proportion from 300 to 1200 mu / # 1, in the form
sodium, potassium, zinc sulfates (already mentioned),
or other composition.

- Ions Si03-- en proportion de 30 à 60 mg/l sous forme de
Si02, Na20, 5 H20 ou autre composition.
- Si03 ions-- in proportion from 30 to 60 mg / l in the form of
Si02, Na20, 5 H20 or other composition.

In addition, care will be taken to maintain the pH of the water containing these additions, between 6 and 9.

Thanks to the invention, the wear on the liners of rollers made of common metals such as steels which are weakly alloyed with chromium, molybdenum, or even vanadium, is reduced to a few tenths of a millimeter per year and the duration of the initiation and The propagation of thermal fatigue cracks is notably lengthened, to the point that the service life until the linings of these rollers rupture is multiplied by a factor of the order of 1.5 to 5 and sometimes more, depending on the case. The savings thus made on the spare parts station is therefore all the more appreciable as it allows the use of rollers made with usual materials of limited cost to be continued.

So that this saving is not burdened by the cost of water treatment with the recommended elements, it will be advantageous to circulate this water in a closed circuit and by compensating with additions of the water discharged to the atmosphere in the form of mist from vaporization on the surface of the cast steel bar. It will then suffice to ensure that the ph of this water is maintained as is already the case on industrial installations, and to periodically check the content of the additives in the water.

The invention can be used in neighboring technical fields and applied in particular to rolls of hot rolling mills or to guide rolls of sheets in coolers.
