Abstract
Description
DISPOSITIF DE DETECTION D'UN DEFAUT D'ETANCHEITE D' UN CABLE éLECTRIQUE
La présente invention concerne les câbles électriques étanches et, plus précisément, un dispositif permettant de détecter un défaut d'étanchéité d'un tel câble.DEVICE FOR DETECTING A SEALING DEFECT IN AN ELECTRIC CABLE
The present invention relates to sealed electrical cables and, more specifically, a device for detecting a leak in such a cable.
The behavior of the synthetic insulators included in high-voltage cables poses a certain number of problems when these insulators are simultaneously subjected to high electrical stresses and in contact with water. As a result, high-voltage targets are sealed using a lead sheath urn protected by a plastic sheath. However, the cost of the lead sheath is very high. To overcome this drawback, it is known to use, in place of lead, an aluminum foil glued to the outer protective sheath, a sheet whose electrical conductivity is reinforced by a layer of conductive wires, and to provide protection against the propagation of corrosion due to a leak in the cable using a sealing material such as cellulose powder, introduced into the intervals left free between the conductive wires and the aluminum foil, on the one hand, and the layer immediately adjacent to the conductive wires, on the other hand, as described in French patent application No. 79 22 385, filed on September 7 1979 in the name of the applicant, and / or in the grooves in the grooves formed at the periphery of the layer covered by the aluminum sheet, as described in French patent application No. 77 08 106, filed on March 18, 1977 in the name of the plaintiff.
However, despite these precautions preventing any propagation of the corrosion, in the event of perforation of the outer protective sheath, the screen formed by the aluminum foil can be damaged locally. In addition, the radial tightness of the plastic protective sheaths is not absolute and, in the case of laying the cable in particularly wet terrain, the aluminum foil may be in contact with water.
Such leaks are generally difficult to detect and locate and the purpose of the present invention is precisely to allow easy detection of such defects and their location.
According to the invention, at least one conductive wire coated with an insulator whose dielectric characteristics vary as a function of humidity is placed under the cable protection sheath in addition to the usual components of the latter, so that in if moisture is present, the insulation becomes conductive and closes an electrical circuit, the resistance value of which determines the location of the leak. According to the embodiments, a single conductive wire can be placed under the sheath, its insulator being in contact with the screen of the cable so that the electric detection circuit consists of the conductive wire and the screen, or else two conducting wires can be placed under the sheath so that the electric detection circuit consists of only the two wires.
The invention will be better understood and other objects, advantages and characteristics thereof will appear more clearly on reading the following description of an embodiment given without limitation, description to which a drawing is appended.
The single figure schematically shows in section an electric cable with a mixed screen including two conductive wires in accordance with the present invention.
The electric cable shown has a conductive core 1, successively covered with a semiconductor screen 2, an insulating jacket 3 and a semiconductor layer 4. The metal screen shown is of the mixed type, it is that is to say that it is constituted by an aluminum sheet 6, covering a sheet of conductive wires 5, and glued to the external protective sheath 7. In known manner, the intervals 8 and 9 are filled with material of watertightness preventing any longitudinal propagation of moisture in case of perforation of the sheath.
According to the invention, two conductive wires 10, 11, coated with a water-sensitive insulator, are disposed within the sheet of conductive wires 5 of the metallic screen of the cable.
One of the ends of these two conductive wires is connected to a device for detecting the closure of the electric circuit in such a way that, in the presence of moisture, when the insulation of these two wires 10, 11 becomes locally conductive and, by then closes the electrical circuit made up of these two wires, the detection device generates an alarm signal.
By measuring the resistance of the electrical circuit thus formed, it is easy to calculate the length of the circuit and, consequently, the point where the leak has occurred, that is to say the place where the water has entered the cable.
The insulation of such conductive wires must be chosen from materials sensitive to humidity, that is to say hygroscopic, among which mention may be made of simple paper and cotton.
Although only one embodiment has been described, it is obvious that any modification made by a person skilled in the art in the spirit of the invention would not depart from the scope of the present invention. For example, it is possible to provide only one conductive wire, the electric detection circuit then being constituted by the wire and the metal screen proper.
