Abstract

The exhaust silencer consists of two sections (1,2) with a bend between them. Each section has an elliptical outer sheet (3,4) with end plates (5,6,7,8). The sections are connected by three tubes (20,30,40) each with sets of perforations in selected regions. The middle tube (20) forms the entry tube, one outer tube (40) discharges from the second sections, and the other tube (30) terminates inside each section. A partition (12) inside the second section forms two chambers (14,15) into which gases discharge through corresponding perforations (24,25,32,33) in two tubes (20,30). Another partition (9) in the first section forms two chambers (10,11). Perforations (23,31,41) in the three tubes discharging into the second chamber (11) and perforations (21) in the inlet part at the first chamber, together with perforations (42,43) at the discharge end (P) form a baffle.

Description

The present invention, due to the collaboration of
Mr. Thierry NAUDIN, concerns the exhaust silencers used in particular on motor vehicles.

- absorption,
- réflexion,
- interférence.
We know that the acoustic attenuation means used in exhaust silencers mainly use the following three principles
- absorption,
- reflection,
- interference.

The absorption silencer is a low pass filter in which the HF components are attenuated by the friction of part of the fluid in a lining of absorbent material arranged around a perforated pipe.

The attenuation by reflection is obtained by combining one or more acoustic resistances with the piping so that the sound which propagates there is partially reflected, which entralne a damping of the noise at the exit of the system.

The principle of attenuation by interference consists in carrying out a division of the wave or waves in order to reincorporate the fraction (s) deviated to the main vein only at the appropriate time and by introducing between the main vein and each deflected fraction a difference of walking which corresponds in fact to the difference between the length of the two paths followed by the two flows considered. Each value of the path difference corresponds to an optimal attenuation for a determined frequency component, the value of the attenuated frequency being inversely proportional to the value of the path difference. It is therefore easier to attenuate the high sounds (HF and / or MF) by interference than the low sounds (LF).

Mufflers are currently used in automobile construction which superimpose at least two of the effects defined above, namely reflection and interference. These silencers comprise an envelope into which at least two parallel perforated tubes penetrate, an inlet tube or upstream tube and a departure tube or downstream tube, traversed in series by the exhaust gases.

Given the space requirements which these silencers must meet, we have sought to increase their efficiency in reducing the bass by increasing the value of the maximum path difference that can be obtained, in particular by multiplying the references and by example by making devices with two returns and three tubes or four returns and five tubes.

However, this development is not entirely satisfactory since it involves very serious drawbacks.

In particular, such a solution gives rise to a very significant increase in the pressure drop across the muffler, which has the effect of reducing the efficiency of the engine.

In addition, if lton increases the dimensions and in particular the length of the silencer so that the maximum path difference of the waves is as large as possible, this leads to assemblies which are often difficult to accommodate given the constraints of installation on the motor vehicles.

The object of this invention is to provide an exhaust silencer for a combustion engine which is easier to install and which has sound attenuation characteristics as satisfactory as the known silencers.

It relates to a silencer comprising a closed envelope and at least two tubes, namely an upstream tube, and a downstream tube, perforated at least in certain areas and traversed in series by the exhaust gases, characterized in that the closed envelope is produced in the form of at least two separate enclosures, connected by sections of each of the tubes.

The connecting sections of the tubes, arranged between two consecutive enclosures can be bent or generally shaped to allow the installation of the various enclosures. Preferably, no acoustic function is provided in these connecting sections.

According to one embodiment, there is provided at least one deflection tube extending between two balancing chambers of two separate enclosures.

The invention will be described in more detail below in connection with an embodiment and with reference to the accompanying drawing. Fig. only one of this drawing represents diagrammatically a silencer whose closed envelope is produced in the form of two enclosures 1; 2; each consisting of a side wall 3 4; of elliptical section, for example, and two end walls 5, 6; 7, 8; crimped or welded on the side wall.

The enclosure 1 is divided by a transverse partition 9 into two chambers 10, 11, the chamber 10 constituting a balancing chamber. Similarly, the enclosure 2 is divided by two transverse partitions 12, 13, into three chambers 14, 15, 16, the last of which constitutes a balancing chamber.

Three tubes, each made in one or more parts, complete this silencer
- an upstream tube 20, connected to the exhaust pipe of the engine, if necessary with the interposition of at least one other silencer (not shown) passes through the first enclosure 1 and the two chambers 14, 15, of the second enclosure 2 and opens into the balancing chamber 16 of this second enclosure. I1 comprises several series of orifices: a first series 21 at the level of the chamber 10, or slightly upstream of this chamber, where it is surrounded by a sleeve 22; a second series 23 at the level of the chamber 11; and a third and a fourth series 24, 25, to the right of chambers 14, 15, respectively.

- An intermediate tube 30 extends between the two balancing chambers 10 and 16 and comprises three series of orifices 31, 32, 33, respectively, at the level of the orifices 23, 24, 25, of the upstream tube.

- A downstream tube 40, extends from the balancing chamber 10, passes through the chamber 11 and the enclosure 2 and extends beyond this enclosure. I1 comprises, in the example chosen, three series of orifices 41, 42, 43, located respectively, at the level of the chamber 11 (orifices 41), and of the chamber 15, in the vicinity of the partitions 12, 13 ( ports 42 and 43).

The various orifices have, for example, diameters of the order of 3.5 mm and are separated by a center distance of the order of approximately 10.5 to 12 mm.

In the example shown, the sections of the tubes aaa 20, 30, 40, designated by the references 20a, 30, 4o 40a, which are located between the two enclosures 1, 2, are bent to allow easier installation of these two pregnant.

Resonators can also be provided at carefully chosen locations of the different tubes, to attenuate certain frequencies, but have not been shown in the drawing.

b c d e f g h i - bi
b c h i - bi
b c d e f g h i j k 1 - bl
etc.
By designating by the letters a, b, ..., n, p, different points of the path of the gases, it can be noted that according to the invention large differences in path can be achieved such as, for example
bcdefghi - bi
bchi - bi
bcdefghijk 1 - bl
etc.

The two stages marked m and n are intended to seek an additional interference effect and to cut the length 1P which would be detrimental to good attenuation.

The fact of providing at least two speakers arranged in series in functional association makes it possible to obtain path differences corresponding to the developed distance from their most distant ends, as if the volumes were not separated. This is quite surprising and constitutes an essential advantage, both in terms of operating efficiency and flexibility of use.

It was thus possible to verify that such a device made it possible to obtain an attenuation of the mouth noise comparable to that provided by the best one-piece silencers of great length, without. practically that it is necessary to change the environment of the rear part of the vehicle.
