Abstract

A clock pulse generator (10) with a given frequency (h) higher than the measured frequency is used in the pulse train frequency measuring system. The number of generator pulses between two sequential pulses of the train (T!=h/f) is counted, and the measured frequency is derived from a h/T inversion. Pref. the generator pulses are supplied to a counter (1) reset to zero by pulses of the measured frequency. The counter state at the instant of rising flanks of the train pulses is stored in a semiconductor memory (2), which delivers a count proportional to the pulse train period. This count is supplied to a programmable inverter (3), which converts the supplied value (T) into the frequency to be measured. The system provides measurement of high precision, without limitations to the measuring period.

Description

The present invention relates to a method and a device for digital measurement of a frequency by period inversion.

We know how to measure the frequency of the pulses by means of a counter counting the number of frequency tops for a given time. However, this classic solution cannot be both rapid and precise. Indeed, if you want precision you have to count a large number of pulses so the measurement is slow. If you want to be fast you can only count a small number of pulses so the measurement is imprecise. It should be noted that for a signal frequency f = 1 Hz, for example, the response time of the measurement being linked to the relative precision x of the measurement (example x = 1S) by the relations>, f the conventional measurement takes place with a response time greater than 100 seconds which is excessive.

The device according to the present invention overcomes this drawback.

In this one, in fact, the precision can be as high as you want while the response time of the measurement is reduced in notable proportions.

The subject of the present invention is a method of digital measurement of a variable frequency f, characterized in that the number of pulses is counted
T = h / f separating two successive pulses of the frequencies f by means of a clock of frequency h greater than f then by inversion T on
T deduces the frequency f.

The present invention also relates to a digital measurement device with a variable frequency f, characterized in that a clock of fixed frequency h greater than f, sends its pulses to a counter reset to zero by the pulses f and delivering an increasing number of O to h / f memorized by a lock at the instants of the rising edges of f and delivering a number h / f = T, proportional to the period of f, which is applied to a member programmed so that for a input T it delivers h a number fh which is the measure of the frequency to be determined.

The invention will be better understood on studying the example given below with reference to the appended drawing in which FIG. 1 represents a block diagram of the measuring device and FIG. 2 represents a diagram of the frequencies f and h as well as the results at the different stages.

We see in Figure 1, a counter 1 counting the frequency pulses h from a fast clock (10) stabilized by quartz for example. The constant frequency h (100 Hz for example) is much greater than the frequency f to be measured, this varying from 0 to 1 Hz for example
The frequency f is applied to the reset command (RESET) of counter 1.

From counter 1, a binary word varying from O to m / f comes out. This number is applied to a lock 2 memorizing the maximum of this number, ie T = h / f at the instants of the ascending zeros of the frequency f also applied to the clock command H of lock 2. The number T is applied to a device 3, read-only memory or microprocessor programmed so that it reverses at output h the number of inputs according to the hyperbolic relation f = T in which h represents the number characterizing the constant frequency of the fast clock 10.

En sortie on obtient bien la fréquence f. At the output we get the frequency f.

In Figure 2 we see rectangular pulses at the frequency f = 1HZ. Between two ascending zeros T1 and T2, 100 pulses are counted at the frequency h = 100HZ. The period T = h / f is equal to 100 at time T2.

La fréquence f obtenue par la relation h/T est bien égale à 1.The frequency f obtained by the relation h / T is indeed equal to 1.

As a measurement accuracy, we get a number x = 1, that is 1% since we know the signal period 1 second with an accuracy T + 0.01 seconds.

The response time depends on the reset of counter 1, i.e. i = 1 second.

The measurement is therefore fast and precise.

The applications of the measuring device relate, for example, to the speed control of electric motors.
