Abstract

The heel part (3) of the climbing-iron has at the back one or more rearward facing spurs (11,12). These spurs allow the climber to find a hold at the back as he turns on the ice or when he has his back to the cliff as when climbing downhill. These spurs pref. taper to a point and end in a claw defined by right-angled edges. The claws are preferably serrated or forked and the spurs themselves can define an arc or point inclined and down. The spurs are preferably but not exclusively an integral continuation of the heel part of the crampons.
