Abstract

The process makes it possible to increase in high proportions the tensile strength of enamels for dental porcelains once the prosthesis is finished. Provided that the enamel composition is suitable therefor, it can be applied to any enamelled dental prostheses. The process consists in soaking the finished prostheses in a molten salt bath so as to exchange the alkali metal ions at the surface of the enamel against alkali metal ions of larger size which are contained in the bath. The compression stresses generated at the surface by the difference in size of the exchanged ions greatly increase its tensile strength. In the example studied, where the enamel contains 10 % by weight of Na2O, a soaking of 5 minutes in a bath of molten potassium nitrate at 480 DEG C doubles the tensile strength of the latter. The process can be applied to any dental porcelains manufactured in the laboratory or in the factory (ceramic or ceramometallic jacket crowns, platinum facing pins, porcelain teeth with clamps).
