Abstract
A digital electronic circuit gives control of the time interval in which the primary current flows in an ignition coil. This allows improved coil design. The circuit accepts synchronising pulses from transducers mounted on the crankshaft to provide data on engine speed and piston location. One signal corresponds to Top Dead Centre (TDC) and the other is ahead of TDC. These signals are fed to an automatic advance control circuit which emits a signal ahead of TDC. A count M synchronised by the TDC pulses is related to engine speed. A predetermined count L proportional to the desired on time is subtracted from M and the result loaded to a programmable down counter (11) which is decremented to zero to end the off period and commence the on period when the coil primary current flows, terminated by the next automatic advance controller pulse. Special provisions are made at starting speeds.
