Abstract

Liquefier for inorganic binders is made by (1) sulphoration of phenol with 1.01-1.10 mol. core H2SO4 or oleum at 100-150 degrees C for 30 mins., (2) addn. of 0.65-0.80 mol. formalin with cooling to maintain 100 degrees C for 30 mins. (3) neutralisation to pH 7-8 with alkali hydroxide, and (4) diluting with water to a working concn. of 20% solids, giving a product with density 1.11 and viscosity 5-10s. by WS-4. Used as super-liquefier in concrete and mortor to reduce water addition and give self-levelling and compacting properties. Prepn. is by a simplified and accelerated one-stage process which utilises the exothermic heat of reaction. The product causes acceleration of the setting of concrete instead of the usual retardation and eliminates the need for modifiers, e.g. polyols, to speed up setting. Higher quantities can be used, giving improved performance.
