Abstract

The windmill drives an alternator (3) via a mechanical drive including a free - wheel system (7). This allows the the windmill to drive the alternator but not vice - versa. The alternator drives a DC generator (4), as part of an AC/DC converter (2) which in turn acts as a charging source for battery banks (5). Separate circuits provide speed regulation (11) for the DC generator and charging level (12) for the batteries. When win d speed is insufficient to drive the alternator the battery bank drives a stand-by generator (14) which is automatically switched (8) into the supply network (6) instead of the directly driven generator (3). Similarly when conditions require it the DC part of the convertor drives the alternator.
