Abstract

Electrochemical catalytic system comprises (a) an anode of an oxidisable metal such as Al or Fe, (b) a cathode of Pt. Fe or vitreous carbon and (c) an electrolyte comprising (i) dinitrosyl Fe chloride (I) or a mixt. of FeCl3 or FeCl2 and NO, and (ii) an electrochemical solvent. The system is esp. useful for selective dimerisation of conjugated diolefins into dimers with a cyclohexenic structure, using an electrochemical cell contg. an anode, a cathode and a reference electrode. The cell contains a suitable solvent, the diolefin to be dimerised, and the (I) or iron chloride + NO. The cathode is then taken to a potential (w.r.t. the reference electrode) corresponding to the highest reduction state of the cpd. The potential is maintained between the cathode and the reference electrode e.g. using an automatic control device which provides the required voltage and current. The proces avoids the use of toxic materials, uses only small amts. of energy, and gives selective dimerisation of conjugated diolefins into cyclohexenic cpds.
