Abstract

Padding for a bullet-proof vest comprises an envelope made of two layers of fabric tied together at intervals into an undulating form by a third layer of fabric and enclosing a stuffing made of expanded particles which are irreversibly compressible. Particles are chosen to have sufficient crash-resistance to withstand normal handling and wear, but to collapse and dissipate energy from a high energy impact, to reduce transmission of high impulse shock. Width and depth of the sub-compartments within the envelope limit the movement of the particles to a distance of 3-25 times their own dia. Pref. the particles are beads of expanded polystyrene and the envelope pockets are approx. 3-4 cm deep and across. Pref the fabrics are of Nylon (RTM-polyamide) and are impermeable.
