Abstract

The piston compresses air in the cylinder which communicates via passage with first and second auxiliary combustion chambers. A reciprocable valve selectively blocks communication between the chambers. Fuel is injected into the second chamber during the compression stroke of the engine, the chambers then being in communication. Before TDC the valve closes. Around top dead centre additional fuel injection into the first chamber begins. The air fuel mixture in the second chamber is then ignited and the valve opened to cause ignited fuel to ignite the air-fuel mixture in the first chamber.
