Abstract

Imines of formula (I) (where R is H or 1-36C alkyl, pref. 10-26C alkyl) are new. (I) are prepd. by reacting 3,3',4,4'-benzophenone-tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride (BTDA) with RNH2, pref. at atmospheric pressure and 230-250 degrees C using 3-3.5 moles of RNH2 per mole of BTDA. In an example a mixt. of 0.055 moles BTDA and 0.17 moles hexadecylamine was heated for 3 hr. while removing H2O by azeotropic distn. with toluene. The prod. comprises (I; R = C16H33).
