Abstract
Prodn. of granular, practically dry (NH4)2HPO4 (I) comprises partial reaction, in a tube reactor, of H3PO4 and NH3 so that the heat of reation causes evaporation of water and formation of a suspension. This is supplied together with NH3 and recycled (I) to a granulator where more water is evapd. and granular prod.formed. This prod. is transported in a flow of air towards an ambient-air cooler, so that during transport it undergoes further drying and cooling as surface moisture evaporates. Pref. the granules are tumbled in a rotating drum in contact with a circulating counterflow of air to ensure additional drying and cooling. Pref. fine granules are recycled and oversize material ground. An appts. for the process is claimed. (I) is used to make fertilisers. A dry (1-2% moisture) prod. is now made without any need for fuel for drying; this represents a saving of 5 Francs per tonne of (I). Fewer stages are required with less material to be recycled, also smaller equipment and reduced emissions of dust and fluoride; and the system needed for purifying off gases operates at a lower temp.
