Abstract

Rocks and other materials are rendered impermeable (under wet or dry conditions) by the application of a prod. comprising >=1 silicate and a carbonate. The mixt. can also be used as a cement additive. A pref. compsn. is a mixt. of Ca silicate and Na carbonate. A colloidal material, esp. colloidal silica, may also be added. The mixt. is applied as a 0.1-10% soln., esp. a 0.5-3% soln. in water. The soln. may also be used as the making-up water when making cement. The mixt. reacts to give salification of the calcium, with a compact impermeable structure. When applied to existing surfaces these should first be wetted to ensure max. penetration of the prod.
