Abstract

This is a secondary, treatment for waste water from industrial or domestic sources which has already been clarified by screening, settling etc. The water is percolated by gravity through two layers of peat resting on a granular filter bed of sand or gravel etc. Pref. the water is passed through a first peat bed of 5-30 cm. thickness on a first granular filter bed and then through a second peat bed of 10-80 cm. thickness on another granular fitler bed. Alternatively, the water can be passed through a single peat bed comprising two superimposed layers of different types of peat on top of a granular filter bed. Used for second-stage purificn. of waste water prior to disposal in rivers, public authority drains etc. It is a simple and inexpensive treatment which can eliminate the use of additives, replace activated sludge treatment and does not involve aeration, agitation or decanting.
