Abstract

The system utilises the unique rectilinear properties of laser light to obtain a metrologically precise measurement of deviations from perfect shape. Mechanical sensors using articulated levers transform translation and inclination movements into electrical signals via optical links. Laser beam components (F1 - F5) are deflected by pentagonal prisms (8, 9, 19, 26) onto right angled prisms (13-16, 25) fixed rigidly to the displacement levers Reflected beams are detected by photo cells (17-20, 27) providing analogue signals which are functions of prism displacement. Laser, beam splitters and photo cells are kept stable on an optical bench (12). Signals proportional to axial and radial deviations which are sufficient to define the profile of the plate, can constitute matrix elements in computer-solvable simultaneous linear equations to calculate plate profile in particular angular orientations.
