Abstract

It is normally necessary to disconnect the DC supply for a check of battery condition, bur the present system avoids this operation and the risks of failure involved. It exploits the high internal impedance of the rectifier in an intermediate range of time constants, which will not therefore affect a measurement in parallelon that time scale. Timing signals, adjustable at intervals typically between 300 and 600 seconds and with duration of between 10 and 100 milliseconds, actuate the periodic connection of a load resistor across the battery terminals. If the resulting current is lower than a preset threshold, the alarm of low battery voltage is triggered. The timing and commutation systems are powered by the battery, through isolation diodes and reservoir condensers. The load resistor is protected by a series fuse.
