Abstract

The spring loaded fastener is used to secure the fabric cladding to the ribs of a large parasol such as a beach umbrella. A constant tension is applied to the fabric despite seasonal expansion or contraction. The umbrella has a mast supporting individually stayed ribs, which radiate from pinned joints on the mast head. The pin-jointed stays are attached to a slidable collar. The fastener may use a compression spring (14) housed in a cylinder (10), the outer extremity (15) of the rib entering the cylinder to bear on the spring, and the cylinder being located by a stitched pocket in the edge of the fabric.
