Abstract

The outer wall of a building has a load carrying outer leaf (1) and a thermally insulating inner leaf (3). The space between them is divided by an intermediate partition (2) into an outer air gap (4) and an inner air gap (5). The outer gap has an opening (8) to atmosphere at high level. There is an opening (9) between the outer and inner gaps at low level and an opening (10) from the inner gap to the inside of the building at high level. There are heaters (11, 12) at the bottom and top of the inner gap. These heat the incoming air and also produce the necessary air movement by natural convection.
