Abstract

Mechanical characteristics of the terrain such as modulus of deformation and compressibility are measured at various depts in a bore hole. Conditions in the hole may be wet or dry. A borehole (1) contains a tubular assembly (2) which is lowered to the required layer (3) in the ground. A probe (4) has an extension (5) which slides telescopically into the tubular assembly. Hydraulic pipes (6) from pumps (7, 8, 9) operate hydraulic jacks (10, 12, 13) in vertical (10) and in diametrically opposed horizontal axes (12, 13). Manometers (39) indicate pressures which are related to pressures exerted by the probe jack systems on the ground under measurement. Measured values are converted into the required coefficients by the Coulomb equation.
