Abstract

The lay-up bench is for jointing fibre-optic cables, where each cable consists of a central core with an axially grooved sheath, each groove holding an individual fibre optic line an overall sheath providing protection. The two cables are brought together in a clamping section which is in two basic halves each being positioned by worm drives. Each optic line position has an associated Peltier effect cell. Each line end is moistened and hand held in contact with the Peltier cell, the freezing immobilizing it instantly before end polishing and jointing.
