Abstract

The double-glazing system uses glass panes of different thickness. The panes are separated by a hollow spacer of rectangular cross-section with a desiccant (8) in the spacer cavity. A gap in the surface of the spacer allows circulation of trapped air through the cavity. The outer vertical faces (6) of the spacer have ridges (12) which almost tough the interior pane surfaces. A cushioning, impact-absorbing layer fills the gaps between the panes and the spacer, and also provides a waterproof seal between the panes and the supporting base-plates (5) of the spacer. A shallow groove (17) in the base of the spacer enhances spacer flexibility and inhibits distortion and stress of the glass panes.
