Abstract

A twisting restraint device is introduced where very long wires are twisted, in a strand-making appts., e.g. for stranding telephone wire cables. As the wire passes through the appts., it is restrained from turning around its lengthwise axis between two points on its path. The device comprises a guide introduced between these points so as to restrain rotation of the wire on its axis. Means are provided to turn the guide around the direction of wire travel between the two points, and means are further provided periodically to vary at least one of the following parameters: (i) the direction of rotation of the guide around the wire axis; (ii) the speed of rotation of the guide; (iii) the speed of travel of the wire, and (iv) the distance separating the two points. The device, simple and economical, provides a slighter pitch of twist than any previously known devices. The average twist may be varied over a wide range per unit of wire length.
