Abstract

Lipids and proteins are extracted from oil seeds by (i) making proteins insol. and inactivating enzymes by boiling the milled seed with water, (ii) adjusting the pH of the suspension to 3.7-8.5, (iii) sepg. the lipoprotein fraction, and (iv) extracting the lipids from the lipoprotein and isolating lipid and protein. Suitable oil seeds include oil-rich seeds such as arachis, sunflower, rape, copra, palm and cotton, esp. rape which is normally unsuitable for cattle cakes because of its high content of cellulose and toxins.
