Abstract

The suture of oriented fibre comprises an isomorphic polyoxalate (I) having cyclic and linear units of formula - O.R.O.CO.CO -x (where 5-95 mole% of R = -(CH2)nA(CH2)n-, the remainder is -(CH2)-4+2n; A is trans-1,4-cyclohexylene or p-phenylene; n = 1 or 2 (same for both types of R) and x is the degree of polymerisation giving a fibre-forming polymer of mol. wt. >10000). The sutures can be monofilaments or multifilaments, e.g. braids. Filaments of (I) have good in vivo strength retention; are absorbed without adverse tissue reaction; high tensile and knot strengths (>30000 and 20000 psi respectively) and can be sterilised by gamma radiation without deterioration.
