Abstract

A vertical electrode, for a diaphragm electrolyser, comprises an inner plate on which are fixed flat, outer plates constituting anode and cathode applied against the diaphragm surrounding the electrode and provided with openings or bosses channeling the gases formed by the electrolytes towards the inner plate. It incorporates outer plates, each consisting of a sheet of expanded metal. Each mesh of the expanded metal constitutes an opening, oriented so as to direct the bubbles or gas towards the centre plate. The sheets of expanded metal are placed so that the smaller dimension of the meshes is vertical, and so that the peaks of the meshes are opposite. They are connected electrically to the inner plate by point welds. The system improves the electrodes of the parent patent, giving comparable results at a lower cost.
