Abstract

Intumescent mouldable compsn. comprises (a) powdered Na2SiO3 with particle size 500 mu, a SiO2/Na2O ratio of 2.3-3.5, and contg. 15-35 wt.% water; (b) 3-20 wt.% w.r.t. the dry wt. of the Na2SiO3, of SiO2 gel of specific surface 100-400m2/g., an average particle size of 2-40m mu and about 2-6 silicic gps./100 angstroms 2, having a ratio SiO2/Na2O of 3.0-4.5; (c) 8-33 wt.% w.r.t. the dry Na2SO3 of >=1 oxide or hydroxide of Al, Mg or an alkaline earth metal, of average particle size 300 mu; and (d) 30-60 wt.% w.r.t. the dry Na2SiO3 of added water. Large shapes which can be used directly in fire retardant devices can be made in single pieces. The prods. do not need to be dried and have sufficient strength to be self supporting at ambient temp.
