Abstract

The shield is used to drill a semicircular tunnel, the roof being curved. It comprises a fabricated structure which rests on side pads and is moved forward by hydraulic rams as work progresses. To advance the shield, the base rams take all its weight on base plates, other rams relieving the weight on the side pads. The forward advancing rams push the shield along slides resting on the base plates. The weight is then retaken on the side plates by reversing the rams, the base plates also being brought forward. The base pads (8) may have a trapezoidal shape to present a large ground area and a smaller area beneath each of the vertical axis rams.
