Abstract

The coating consists of one or more intermetallic cpds. (IMC) with general formula AxBy; where A=Be, Al, Sc, Y, a lanthanide, Si, Ti, Zr, Hf, Th, V, Nb, or Ta; and B=Ru, Rh, Pd, Ir, or Pt; where x and y are whole numbers >=1, esp. where x + y = 5 max. The coating may be a mixt. of two or more IMC, and is esp. 2-15 mu m thick. The coating is used on at least part of the substrate; and the esp. pref. substrate is a high strength turbine blade. The coating provides resistance to wear and corrosion, e.g. on superalloy substrates, where the coating has a m.pt. or decompsn. pt. >1400 degrees C.
