Abstract

The heater plug for starting a compression-ignition engine has an electrically-conductive element fitted inside an electrically-conductive sheath. An insulator is positioned between the element and sheath and is connected to the sheath t one end. The electrical resistance of the sheath (2) is greater than that of the element (6). The portion of the sheath at the end furthest from that connected to the element can have a lower resistance than the latter end. The ratio of the electrical resistance of the sheath to that of the element may be arranged to decrease with increasing temperature.
