Abstract

The inertia reel is used with a vehicle safety belt and holds the wearer if subjected to sudden decelerations. It comprises an inner plate (9), near the end of the belt reel spindle, which locks rollers (12) against an outer plate (10), 11). On the end (7) of this same spindle is a flywheel (8), its rim an annular bead. This has toroidal pawl teeth (33) cut around, each tooth forming a segment of a circle. A free swinging weight (16) locks into these teeth (19) the toroidal tooth from permitting the unit to be fixed at any angle.
