Abstract

L'invention concerne un procédé et un appareil permettant de produire du métal par électrolyse dans un bain de sels fondus. Dans un mode de réalisation, l'appareil comprend une cellule électrolytique contenant un bain de sels fondus et des piles verticales d'électrodes placées dans le bain de sels, l'électrode supérieure 46 étant placée en dessous du niveau supérieur du bain. Une chicane 59 s'étend verticalement au-dessus de l'électrode supérieure, son sommet se situant au-dessus du niveau supérieur du bain. Des ouvertures peuvent être prévues dans la chicane au ras des électrodes ou légèrement au-dessus, ce qui permet l'écoulement du bain latéralement et en dessous du niveau supérieur du bain (selon les flèches C et D) et d'augmenter la vitesse de l'écoulement du bain et du métal entre les électrodes adjacentes de la pile verticale.
