Abstract

The ship's propeller shaft is made up of two coaxial tubes which are twisted in opposing directiosn and secured under torsion, without reaching the elastic limit. The ends of the tubes are secured on flanges which can be bolted together in a series of settings. The shaft is simpler and lighter than conventional bored shafts. The construction enables large torsion forces to be transmitted. The centre sections of the shafts are braced by friction pad inserts (12) to prevent the tubes from whipping.
