Abstract

Phosphate values are recovered from waste aq. acid solns generated in Al bright dip operations and contg. H2PO4 combined with appreciable amts. dissolved AlPO4 and HNO3. The phosphates are recovered as Na2PO4 crystals (including hydrate complexes with NaOH). Recovery is by (a) reacting the waste acid aq. soln. with NaOH or NaOH in combination with Na2CO3 to convert all the AlPO4 to NaAlO2 and Na3PO4, the HNO3 to NaNO3 and the H3PO4 to Na3PO4. NaAlO2, NaNO3 and Na3PO4 are all present as dissolved salts inthe aq. soln., (b) removing part of the Na3PO4 by crystallisation, retaining NaAlO2 and NaNO3 as solubilised salts in the remaining mother liquor and (c) sepg. Na3PO4 crystals from the mother liquor. Prod. Na3PO4 is more widely useful than the fertiliser conventionally prepd. from the waste acid solns. and is produced at a commercially competitive price. The change of use allows rinse acid soln. concn. to be reduced, avoiding waste. Phosphate recovery is maximised, with as little as possible tied up with Al values.
