Abstract

La présente invention concerne la protection des fibres optiques contre les effets de l'humidité sur leur résistance mecanique. Une fibre optique en verre 10 comporte un coeur 11 constitué essentiellement de silice dopée recouverte d'une couche 12 elle-même en silice dopée et revêtue d'une troisième couche externe 13 en nitrure de silicium imperméable à l'eau. Cette dernière couche peut éventuellement être recouverte d'une gaine plastique 14 améliorant la résistance mécanique de l'ensemble. L'invention trouve son application, par exemple, dans les installations de télécommunications par guides d'ondes optiques en milieu humide.The present invention relates to the protection of optical fibers against the effects of humidity on their mechanical strength. A glass optical fiber 10 comprises a core 11 consisting essentially of doped silica covered with a layer 12 itself of doped silica and coated with a third outer layer 13 of water-impermeable silicon nitride. This last layer can optionally be covered with a plastic sheath 14 improving the mechanical strength of the assembly. The invention finds its application, for example, in telecommunications installations using optical waveguides in a humid environment.
