Abstract

Device for joining optical fibres end-to-end in sheets, is claimed, each fibre having a stripped part and a sheathed part. The stripped part is supported by a positioning block in a groove. The sheathed part of the fibre is gripped in a support. The ends of the stripped parts are the ends to be joined by welding. The device includes appts. for displacing a microplasma torch having its axis vertical and its flame playing downwardly onto the ends to be joined of the fibres of a cloth lying perpendicular to the torch. The positioning block has a number of similar parallel positioning grooves to accommodate successive fibres in the sheets, each having a V shape at the inner rounded faces. The bottom of each groove empties into a hole of small dia. parallel to the groove. Below the line of the joint and cutting each of the grooves in its middle is an opening emptying into a large chamber which slows down the gas plasma. Clamps with multiple jaws, which move with the fibres clamp the fibres in place and can be displaced with the sheathed fibres allowing successive groups of fibres to be joined in the grooved blocks. Used for joining optical cables. Fibres can be joined in groups rather than individually.
