Abstract

The captive nut has a plastics body insertable into a slot in a sheet metal panel. The body has a head (4) limiting insertion and has external thickened portions (6) allowing insertion but inhibiting withdrawal. The body has an opening (10) for the reception of a self-tapping screw. The body is of elongate cross-section in accordance with the elongation of the slot and the opening is correspondingly elongate. The long side of the opening has triangular section ribs (8) extending in the direction of the length of the screw and into which the screw thread bites in the course of the self-tapping action. The elongate shape of the opening allows for misalignment between screw and nut.
