Abstract
The measurement of the concn. of >=1 monovalent cation which is Cs+, Rb+ or partic. NH+4 present in a soln., in the presence of >=1 divalent cation partic. Ca2+, and/or >=1 trivalent cation partic. Fe3+ or Al3+, involves the use of an electrode of the solid crystalline membrane type, specific w.r.t. the cation, the membrane of which is formed from clinoptilolite. The potential difference is measured between two electrodes immersed respectively in the soln. to be analysed and in a reference soln. The two solns. are sepd. by the clinoptilolite ion exchange membrane. The process can be used for the analysis of the cations, partic. NH4+, present in drinking water and industrial waters. The process can be used e.g. to measure the concn. of Cs+ contained in radioactive water originating from a thermonuclear plant, the NH4+ ions having been previously removed from the water.
