Abstract

Method comprises passing one end of the fibre through an appts. for providing the plastic coating and directing light onto the end of the fibre so that the light is transmitted along the length of the fibre to a photodetector. The light detected then produces, as a function of the luminous flux passed through the fibre, a signal representing the variation of attenuation of the optical fibre occuring while it is being coated. The method is also used while the fibres are being assembled into an optical cable. The process observes the changes of attenuation occurring, during application of the protective coating, at any part of the optical fibre. Similar changes can be observed as a result of assembling the fibre into an optical cable. It permits unsatisfactory lengths of fibre or cable to be cut out and scrapped.
