Abstract

Embossed panels are made by slowly hot pressing a flexible or ductile layer of decorative fibrous material impregnated with a thermosetting resin and superimposed on a substrate which can also be embossed. The impregnated layer is successively impressed, laminated and cured to provide panels which are heavily embossed on one face and plane on the reverse face. The substrate may be of agglomerated chipboard or (expanded) thermoplastic sheet. The fibrous layer is impregnated with a thermosetting polyester, polydiallyl phthalate or pref. a melamine-formaldehyde resin (I), may be a printed paper sheet, opt. coated with a glaze or gel coat of (I) filled with finely divided Ba sulphate. The fibrous mat may be a fabric or a mat. Method is for mfr. of panels where the embossed pattern may be deeper than the thickness of the surface layer of resin impregnated fibres, e.g. >1 mm.
