Abstract

Cutting burner is intended mainly for use under water, and uses an electrode consisting of a metal tube, with an outercoating of insulation. Inside the tube are rods made of ferrous metal, and >=1 rod made of Al, Mg, Ti or their alloy, the rods are located in a circle in the tube and in contact with the bore of the tube, leaving an axial space forthe passage of a reactive gas fed into the tube, which is also supplied with electric power to form an arc. The pref. appts. consists of portable equipment, (a) aportable source of reactive gas, (b) electric power supply and (c) a burner handle fitted with a hand-operated valve controlling the gas flow through a holder to electrode. The electric power supply may include a battery and an electric circuit raising the battery voltage several times before it is fed to the electrode, this circuit pref. includesa hand switch and an oscillator in a voltage multiplier circuit,of the capacitance type. Very high temps. (e.g. 3000 degrees C) are obtd. for cutting stainless steels, nonferrous alloys, cement, concrete, anatifa, barnacles or other submarine flora or fauna. The burner can be used at any depth, e.g. for work on drilling platforms or sunken ships.
