Abstract

A collagen dispersion for topical application to wounds on human skin comprises a paste contg. collagen fibrils and an electrolyte. Also claimed is a special dressing equipped with a layer of electrochemically active material for applying the collagen dispersion to a wound. Also claimed is a dressing equipped with a layer of electrochemically active material for introducing ionic or polar medicaments into a wound by iontophoretic migration. When applied to a wound, the collagen dispersion acquires a net positive charge w.r.t. the wound area. The resulting electric field caused the collagen fibrils to bind together and to the exposed collagen of the wound, thus forming a skin-like protective film. Strengthening the electric field (by means of the special dressing) accelerates this process.
