Abstract
Parts of the pump in dishwashers and washing machines, which are made of low alloy steel, for example the armature shaft of the pump motor, are given improved resistance to stress corrosion cracking by coating the surface with a thin layer of Ni and subjecting the workpiece to a heat treatment at about 1350 degrees K in order to diffuse Ni into the substrate. For treating structural components made of free cutting steel, steel for drawing, for bolts, and structural steel. Method is economical as the shaft does not need to be made of costly Cr-Ni steel.
